Family Auto Service - Alpine

Family Auto Service - Alpine has been doing all of my work on my F150 for the last few years and I'm VERY happy with them. Some reviewers have whined about the "upsell" or the "hard sell", I believe their perception is a bit off. Whenever you take a vehicle to them for anything, they INSPECT it and tell you everything that is less than 100%. The decision is YOURS if you have it done or not, they're just telling you everything that you could do to get your vehicle running like brand new again.I have a specific example I'd like to share. My friend was visiting, and we were driving toward El Cajon (I live in Alpine) when her car suddenly died going down the freeway. Although it started again after we pulled to the side of the road, the check engine light was on; so we headed back home to Family Auto Service - Alpine to make sure everything was ok. Jim had one of his techs look everything over, and the cause of the dying/check engine light was nothing more than severe corrosion buildup on a battery terminal. HOWEVER, because Jim had his tech do the thorough inspection, he found that the tires were in severely bad shape. We knew they were old and "about to need replaced", but the tech found that two of the tires' tread was actually delaminating from the cords, and were about to blow. WE COULD HAVE DIED. Seriously, we had an angel looking over our shoulder that day (quote from Jim, but it's really true - and I am NOT a religious person!). We looked at the tires and agreed with their assessment, and the car was somewhat overdue for several other needed maintenance items as well (additionally, I AGREE with their expert opinion on all of that). We had Family Auto Service - Alpine take care of everything, and the car drives like it's brand new again! At no point was Jim ever PUSHING anything or giving us a "hard sell", he explained everything very thoroughly in plain english and offered options and alternatives and was genuinely concerned about the well-being of a new, potentially repeat customer (my friend). The car is in EXCELLENT shape again and she's VERY happy, and will absolutely be a repeat customer!! In that, they also further solidified my opinion and desire to be a permanent customer. GREAT job Family Auto Service - Alpine!

I had handsdown one of the best mechanic experiences I've ever had, at this place. I was on a road trip from CA to NC when our 1985 Chevy short school bus overheated. Not an easy engine to work on, and you need to be able to trust the mechanic who does it because it has to get you across the country. Rey, the mechanic specialist, perfectly explained the problem (horridly bad/old radiator) and also explained what he could do to fix it, or what we could do ourselves along the way to help the problem.I gave it a 4/5 because they were a bit pricey ($50 diagnosis, $600 to replace the radiator), but that being said they were Very quick and Very reliable. We got all tbe way back to NC without a single problem!Rey, if you are reading this then you have 2 HUGE fans in Asheville, North Carolina! Thanks for everything, we got home safe! -- Lauren and Corlee

In Nov., 2012, my car overheated while I was in Alpine. I left the car with them overnight, and picked it up later on the next day, thinking the car was fixed. It was not. It took while to sort out the problems, some of which concerned the work done by Alpine.Because the end of year holidays, other people and organizations were involved, it took a while to get it all taken care of, but I am ultimately a satisfied customer, and would go back again if I need to.Mistakes happen to everyone, so I don't much care about errors. I do care about how they are handled, and Alpine Auto stayed involved until the issue was resolved.Bottom Line: Alpine made a mistake, and made it right.

This shop has been there as long as I can remember. We are desert rats and have broken down on the freeway before, with truck, bikes and trailer. It's nice to know there is a full service shop somewhere in the distance, if something should happen, like it did to us.The staff is friendly and efficient. Thanks for being there for my family.I am proud to recommend you to my friends.

I was on my to Julian from North Park (central San Diego) yesterday to get my family's Thanksgiving pies and had just pulled off the 8 at Willow Rd. to grab a drink at McDonald's. That's when my temp. gauge went nuts and my car started overheating. My car is a mature, older lady (10 years old) and this had never happened. Yelp listed Family Auto Service - Alpine as the closest place to go, but I was skeptical as it only had 2 stars. Yikes. But I was desperate and stuck.Jim took great care of me from my panicky phone call to the end. They diagnosed the problem, rushed the parts from El Cajon, and stayed late to fix it. (Good thing, as they were going to be closed for the next 4 days and I was 30 miles from home the day before Thanksgiving!)I wasn't able to comparison shop with the price he quoted because my usual shop was already closed for the holidays. Turns out, the price I paid seems about average. Shew. But here's the most AWESOME part: I was totally CRUSHED that I couldn't get to Julian to buy my gluten-free pies (from Apple Alley), so Jim GAVE ME THE KEYS TO HIS JEEP so I could drive up the mountain while they worked on my car. WHAT!?!?!They got my car done, I got my pies, and all is good!

I found Alpine Automotive to be accomodating, fast and honest. I'd highly recommend them, just be sure to talk with Ray.Driving over the Grapevine (Hwy 5) to San Diego, my SUV blew a hole in part of its exhaust system. Got towed to a great little shop in Lebec/Gorman where they apologized for not being equipped for the level of repair they thought was needed (they suspected one or both of my catalytic converters might need replacing) but did replace the blown out pipe, and assured me I'd reach San Diego without further incident since it was "all down hill from here."They advised I take my car to a full service shop when I arrived. They were right, I stayed under the speed limit and did make it to San Diego. There, my 80 yr. old ex-flight engineer father - who knows a thing or two about cars and can't stand to part with a dollar if he doesn't absolutely have to - recommended Alpine Automotive, just down the hill from his house. He has a truck older than Jehoshaphat that he can't stand to part with and Alpine Auto has managed to resuscitate it each time it gives up the ghost. The receptionist was friendly and I found myself doing something I normally never do, I told them what the shop in Lebec had suspected: that it might be a catalytic converter problem (think cha-ching! BIG bucks). I'm sure I had that panicked "what's next?!" look on my face because in an understanding way she told me not to worry, just wait for the diagnostic, it might not be so bad... I was pretty sure it would be bad, but her words did help bring my blood pressure down a few points. After an $80ish diagnostic the news came back: it was *not* either of the converters, it was a bad oxygen scrubber. I was out the door for about $280. Wowwwww.... sure beats thousands for a catalytic replacement. They could have told me it was the converter and I would have believed them, given that the other place was pretty sure that was the problem, but they were honest and that gained my respect. But the story doesn't end here. Leaving San Diego a few days later, the "check engine" light came on again so I pulled over (was about 40 minutes out of town) and called Ray at Alpine Auto. He listened as I told him what happened, asked me some diagnostic questions (you know, what's the engine temp look like, do you hear or feel anything odd when you step on the gas? Did it feel like you were losing power after the light came on?). I wanted to bring the car back, but wasn't sure if I should have it towed all the way to Alpine (think BIG towing bill). Ray was pretty sure, from my answers, that the car could make it on its own power and I felt better about driving it back after talking with him. He was right, too, I made it to Alpine without incident.Even though they had a car in every bay when I arrived, they squeezed me in that day, calling just before closing time. It was discovered the replacement oxygen sensor they'd just installed was bad, so they pulled it out and installed another one. They didn't charge me for the 2nd diagnostic, or for the labor involved with replacing the bad part, both of which I really appreciated. The part, of course, was still under its own warranty so of course there was no charge for that.It struck me that they could have told me the other oxygen sensor had gone bad, or that the converter had gone out after all, but they didn't. And while they were within their rights to charge for the additional labor - it wasn't their fault the part was defective, labor is labor after all - they replaced the defective part and didn't charge me anything extra. I call that good business. My car's been running great ever since, and I just got back from another trip over the Grapevine to visit my dad with no problems whatsoever. I understand others have had some issues with Alpine Automotive in the past, but my dad swears by them, and I have to say, after my own experience with them, I'd trust them to do the right thing. Maybe the other folks visited under different management, or maybe Alpine Automotive just got the message. I only experienced professional, courteous service, a surprisingly reasonable repair and above and beyond customer care after the fact (when the replacement part failed). If I ever have another problem when I'm in San Diego, I won't hesitate to go see Ray at Family Auto Service - Alpine. Thanks again, guys, for helping a girl in distress!
