How To Be Prepared For Unexpected Snow & Road Hazards

Are you ready for unexpected weather and natural disasters? Here in San Diego, we don’t often think of snow, except on TV shows. But earlier this year, in February 2019, we had unexpected snowfall at Lake Elsinore and The Grapevine. And we sure have had our fair share of unexpected fires in California. How do you prepare for these things?

At Family Auto Service, we have several tips to prepare you and your family vehicle for unexpected road conditions. Here is a list of things you should carry in your car, truck, SUV, or van so you can be ready for anything.

Spare tire, a jack, and a lug wrench.

If your tire goes flat and you don’t have run-flat tires, be sure to carry an inflated spare tire, a jack that will safely lift your car, and a lug wrench. You get extra credit if you also pack a reflective vest and flares in case you need to be seen at night while on the side of the road.

Snow chains or snow socks.

If you like to ski, you probably have a set of snow chains. But snow socks are a space-saving alternative that can get your car up a slippery hill. You probably won’t need these items while in downtown San Diego, but you could benefit from having them if you’re in traveling through mountains and hills prone to icy roads.

Emergency First Aid kit.

Your first aid kit should be fairly comprehensive. If you have a large enough trunk to hold it all, our favorite items inside that emergency kit include:

  • Bottled water

  • Snacks

  • First Aid supplied

  • Flashlight with batteries

  • Flares

  • Reflective vest

  • Ice scraper

  • Small shovel

  • Jumper cables

  • Gloves

  • Trash bag

  • Duct tape

  • Tow strap

  • Rain poncho

  • Spare phone charger

  • Blanket

  • Window breaking tool / Safety hammer

  • Fire extinguisher

Preventive maintenance.

We know it sounds obvious, but when you service your vehicle on a regular basis and take care of your auto repair needs right away, your chances of having troubles during unexpected weather or road hazards are significantly lowered. In addition, our 3-year/36,000-mile nationwide warranty will assist you any time you are driving around San Diego, California, or out of state. Bonus points if you always keep your gas tank more than halfway full most of the time.
